As usual I've included a few pictures intended to give a flavour of how things developed over eleven turns. We used Rapid Fire2 for a change with a couple of modifications to artillery fire which proved effective. Now, off we go to Rhanzlistan ~
Rapid Fire !2 seemed to us to work quite well for the battle and produced a believable result we felt. Perhaps we might have prolonged the game beyond eleven turns if we had split the RFF into three sub sections for Morale purposes. I survived four turns of consecutive Morale checks before succumbing and Phil survived two. Once you have minus 4 to begin with the writing is on the wall, or in my case the High Peaks!

Well, that's that for Rhanzlistan for another year. We shall have to wait a while now to see what 2020 will bring for the characters who populate our imaginations and our tabletop. Perhaps Brigadier Bykleigh will be posted to the China frontier, we shall have to see...

However, thanks to agents working amongst the Bhurpas, whose loyalty to the Crown is somewhat elastic shall we say, General Robinski has got wind of the attack and has been busy preparing his defence...
The scenario sees the much vaunted SPIFF with their backs to the high peaks under attack by the RFF. Due to the usual treacherous behaviour of the Bhurpas General Robinski has got wind of the impending assault and has ordered his men to dig in, buying time to evacuate his I'll gotten gains over the mountains and away. To whet your appetite for the action I've taken a few pictures of the initial deployment of the RFF ~
I hope this account of Monday’s spiffing game with Phil here in GHQ will prove some consolation to my loyal reader! The game was played using Bolt Action Second Edition rules.

The scenario I devised was a three handed game for two players. The R.F.F. - the God Guys you recall - had a force of 7 units to pick from their complement, the S.P.I.F.F. - the Bad Guys of course - a force of 8 units from theirs, while there were 6 units of Bhurpa warriors. All three forces had the same objective, namely to seize military supplies left behind in the ruins of an old village and fort. The Bhurpas were activated by their own dice and controlled by whichever of the other two sides had drawn the previous dice for their force. If the Bhurpa dice was drawn out first in any turn it was disguarded. Thus either side could utilise the Bhurpas in their own support, to thwart the enemy's ambitions, or just seize the supplies for the Bhurpas themselves if that was the best choice to hobble the enemy. In addition to these dice, their was a red 'End of Turn' dice, whose title describes its function in the game of course. The game length was set at 12 Turns before nightfall was declared and the game concluded. Now, as ever, as series of pictures and captions to capture the essence of the struggle for any interested passersby ~
The mechanism for random control of the bands of Bhurpa warriors worked really well we both thought. In the early moves, the draw of the dice favoured the cause of the R.F.F., while in the latter stages the control of the warriors entirely passed to the cause of the S.P.I.F.F.! This enabled them to utilise the fire of the bands of warriors to destroy the Tandooris holding the fort's ruins and concentrate their own efforts on holding back the advance of the R.F.F. If the game had beyond the agreed 12 Turns it is probable that the Soviets wold have emerged victorious, but the fall of night comes quickly in Rhazlistan and thwarted their efforts at the last, allowing the R.F.F. to slip away with half of the contested supplies.
I do hope it will not be so long this time before we return to Rhanzlistan and the ongoing tales of daring do which take place amongst its mountains, valleys and villages...
I doubt I will be able, or wanting really, to sit at my painting desk for several weeks. I shall however be able to sit at the dinning table and so I’ve been looking about for small projects which might suit the location and can be tackled in short time slots. Terrain seems the obvious answer, but what exactly?
Well, on a visit with Sue to the local Garden Centre’s aquatic supplies area I found this model of an Indian/Arabian building ~

Now at close examination it’s obviously not 28mm scale, but I think it will pass muster as a palace or mosque on the table with some work. We shall see. It would also make a nice Gurdwara for Sikh Wars games I think, not that I’m planning any you understand. Price? £5.99, a snippet really. I’ll keep you posted as and when it’s finished.Davidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06985725848702292911noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5834413903005641516.post-35835043774311318202018-02-14T11:35:00.002-08:002018-02-14T11:35:39.325-08:00Soviet Meddling in RhanzlistanAfter what was really too long an hiatus, Phil and I dusted off our forces for a return to our Rhanzlistan campaign. The forces of the S.P.I.F.F. lead by the dastardly General Robinski sought to force a passage of the river Rhan and raid deep into territory vital to the governance of the Province and the maintenance of supplies to the Field Force ~
Phil's initial caution left him short of the objective while my force was still in place, though severely mauled! Having coated it in Basetex 'Dried Earth' and gritted the base with my usual basing mixture yesterday I left it all to harden overnight. The first stage is to paint the entire structure, I use Crafter's Acrylic Burgundy Rose as the base colour on all my sub continent buildings, and to was the base to match the figures, again using Crafter's Acrylic 'Country Maple' ~
When the Base coat and the ground wash are dry I next dry brush heavily with Artiste Acrylic 'Burnt Sienna'. It's really necessary to dry brush this coat heavily to help the desired end effect ~
The second dry brushing needs to be much lighter handed and its best to do two light coats rather than one thickish one I've found. For this stage I used Artiste Acrylic 'Clay' and you get this rich orange brown look ~

The final stage of dry brushing is the lightest you'll find. I use a dry brushing of Anita's Acrylic 'Cream'. The effect is to wash down the whole colour while highlighting the edges and texture. The effect produces this look on my Rhanzlistan buildings ~
I've painted the few pieces of exposed wood simply Foundry 'Bay Brown Shade' for now. I'll tinker with that tomorrow probably. Adding dark green static grass, dry green and dark green grass tufts and 'weeds' from various coloured clumps allows the ruin to be dressed and lifted ~
I'm taking a break from figure painting for a couple of days and adding a new terrain piece to the collection for use in our next Rhanzlistan game next month. It's a Supreme Littleness MDF kit which I bought on impulse at Claymore in August. After assembling the kit and leaving the glue to harden overnight I've textured all the building's surfaces with Basetex and the groundwork with my usual basing grit mix. I've added rubble, rocks, bricks and such to bring the whole up. I've also built a small well from rock pieces in the courtyard of the ruin. I'll build a wooden cover for the well later on and add some pots and such from the bits box. Here it is as it stands at present anyway ~
The game would be played using Bolt Action rules over six turns, with an optional seventh turn decided by a dice throw. Phil's S.P.I.F.F. had the task of looting a defended Bhurpa village in the foothills of the mountains of Rhanzlistan. Three objective markers represented the loot, worth respectively 5, 10, and 20 victory points as they were located further from the enemy. The Bhurpas, lead by the worthy if unmilitary Imran Bhykli, scored one victory point for every member of S.P.I.F.F. they killed. The Bhurpas defended their village, determined to repulse the infidel ~
General Robinski organised his S.P.I.F.F. forces and began an assault on a wide front to feel out th strength of the Bhurpa positions. Imran Bhykli had chosen to defend the village with three large groups of Bhurpas, to maximise casualties on the enemy in the later stages, supported by long range artillery, and a MMG located in the foothills to the village's left flank. An 80mm mortar was located in the courtyard of the Headman's house ~
Clearly speed in the assault would be vital for S.P.I.F.F. to achieve its objectives in six or seven turns, so Robinski sent his armoured car directly down the road to the village, spraying the defenders with the fire from its twin turrets ~
Despite several rounds of mortar fire, no hits were scored on the armoured car, though the S.P.I.F.F. artillery did come under Bhurpa fire and their supporting MMG was destroyed by the Bhurpa machine gun team. The end of turn 6 saw the Bhurpas ahead on points but clearly so weakened that in any extra turn they could not resist the advance of the enemy's armoured car, which would give them possession of the final objective and victory by a narrow margin. Tension was high in GHQ as the dice was rolled: wold have an extra turn! Sadly it proved all too much for the remaining Bhurpas and the armoured car rolled unopposed into the courtyard, securing the objective and winning the game for Phil!Davidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06985725848702292911noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5834413903005641516.post-4048041817219633752016-09-12T12:44:00.000-07:002016-09-12T12:44:36.432-07:00On the Road to RhanzlstanWell, having taken delivery of the mountain terrain from Phil last Monday, deciding on today's game was a no brainer! Our game sees 'Robinson Force', a detached element of the Rhanzlistan Field Force, pitted against the dastardly Bhykli Khan, chief of chiefs amongst the Bhurpas of Rhanzlistan, who has been roused to open rebellion by the promise of gold from the Russian embassy to the tribes! Catching news of the uprising from native spies, Brigadie Bykleigh has dispatched a force to chastise the Bhurpas, yet again...
Robinson Force enters the table from the southern end and must force a crossing of the river in one of two spots in order to engage the natives. As Robinson Force gathers for the assault the Bhurpas reveal themselves amongst the rocky heights and in the ruins of an ancient village. For those who like to know these things we used Bolt Action version 1 for the rules, adding a preliminary turn for Robinson Force to enter the table. We played over the usual six turns, though it was all up for the Bhurpas in Turn 5 as you've seen above! Though thoroughly chastised on this occasion there is no doubt that the Bhurpas will rise again or that the marauding forces of S.P.I.F.F. will once again test the metal of Brigadier Bykleigh and the Rhanzlistan Field Force over the coming months.
But seriously, what a wonderfully talented chap and stout friend he is. {I'm even almost sorry I won today's WWII Bolt Action game now!} The process started in the last Blog entry took just one week to completion, starting with the painting of the MDF base to counter possible warping during the process; the application of coats of Polytex ceiling paint to the plastic vacuum formed shell of the mountains; repeated over spraying of colours to bring depth to the piece and bring it to life; endless drybrushing; adding rocky texture and static grass and clump vegetation; and finally, adding the green toweling to match our existing tiles here in GHQ and overspraying it to match ~
Its a former display item for those cod Victorian houses which are sold in Garden Centres around Christmas time. Sue and I were out for a drive in early January this year when we called in at Mere Park garden centre, near Newport in Shropshire. They had a whole building given over to selling off surplus Christmas stock, amongst which were several sizes of these plastic vacuum formed range of hills. This was not the biggest, but it measures about 44" x 18", and seemed to me ideal for converting into some decent sized mountains for my Bhurpas to inhabit.
Now, only eight months later, Phil and I have begun to transform them for the tabletop in GHQ! The first stage was to acquire some 6mm MDF. Local DIY stores used to cut the sheets for you for free, no more apparently. The local builders' merchant will do this, but they were waiting for a part for the saw! Several weeks passed, cue our friendly builder neighbour Martin {Who converted GHQ very reasonably for me.} who offered to get the sheet and cut it for me. Cost £10.06 to him, as opposed to £24.50 to me ~ more incidental evidence of 'Rip Off Britain'!
Having acquired the MDF our first task was to cut off the lower lip around the form and to pad the interior of the vacuum formed hills to make it more sturdy in a game. For some strange reason I forgot to take any pictures of this stage! Sorry! Its packed with off cuts of polystyrene packing I collected over the year from new electrical equipment, held in place by seemingly yards of gaffer tape and all sealed in with clingfilm. It looked a right mess I can tell you but the hills were really solid when we turned them over to fix them to the MDF.

We fixed the hills to the MDF first with an upholsterer's staple gun and then with a hot glue gun to seal the edge to the MDF. It took four glue stick reloads to do the job! The whole piece of 4' x 2' MDF can now be safely handled for the next stages over at Phil's. The first of these was to paint the exposed MDF boards to guard against warping when the texturing and ground working get underway.

While we are generally happy with the overall look of the piece in its raw form, we did agree that the left hand side was rather too stark and gamer unfriendly, so we added some polystyrene pieces to the board to represent a more accessible approach in a game. {By the way, the holes you can see in the flat areas are for the electrical wiring to light up those houses I mentioned.}

The next stages are to coat the exposed polystyrene pieces in filler to give them the necessary strength and then to coat the plastic form, added pieces and the exposed MDF in Polytex flexible ceiling paint. As you can see, we ran out of filler, which Phil collected another tub of today, so I have no doubt the whole piece will soon be ready for the next phase, adding scree slopes and then spraying the whole with Humbrol acrylic 'Dark Brown' as the base colour to work up from.
This is where we are at now. More news of the Mountains of Rhanzlistan as the project unfolds over the next few weeks. Do pop back when you can to see how it develops.
Rumours have been heard over these past months in the markets and villages of the foothills of a great gathering of Bhurpa tribal elders in the palace of that villainous ruler, the Jakzi of Jimbai. Governor Godfrey Godalming has dispatched our hero and a column of His Majesty's finest sons to ascertain the truth behind these rumours, and if necessary to 'civilize' the Jakzi and those troublesome Bhurpas!
For our first return to Rhanzlistan for a while Phil would command the RFF and I would take control of the Bhurpas. Phil's game objective is to capture the Bhrpa tribal elders and their Soviet adviser, mine to survive 2 turns and inflict as great a loss n the RFF as possible; a line in the sand defence really. We used Bolt Action for the game's rules rather than the usual Setting the East Ablaze. In Turn 1 the RFF enters the table with the Bhurpa positions marked by counters, including 5 to mark sniper positions, of which more later. Piper Imrie leads the column across the Bykla river ~
Phil's infantry on his right flank have already survived their first encounter with the Bhupa sniper concealed in the ruins of a village. For each of the 5 Sniper markers the Bhurpas get one shot at their chosen target only, then the opportunity passes. The first bomb destroys a Bhurpa group in the outskirts of the village, reducing the immediate threat to the Horse to the MMG on the roof of another building on the outskirts. Meanwhile tribesmen concealed in a dry stream bed are poised to threaten the RFF's infantry advance ~
Not that they got very far! The second bombing run is equally devastating and the tribesmen and blown to smithereens. Back in the centre, the Bhurpa Maxim takes a heavy toll on the artillery, forcing them to withdraw, but other Bhurpa elements are less successful and the game tips beyond them in Turn 9. Despite the loss of the Bhyklabad Horse to a surprise flank attack and serious losses to their support from the South Staffords and the Gordons its all up for the Jakzi!
An enjoyable game, for all that my fire was particularly ineffective bar the Maxim's efforts. The game was really swung by the A10's two bombing runs. The first destroying a whole group, the second almost destroying another. With such losses in two turns the Bhurpas could not inflict enough damage to slow the RFF's remorseless advance and Phil was able to achieve his objective in Turn 9. The Bhurpas had mauled the Horse, the 18lb gun, the Gordons and the South Staffords but it had not been enough to turn the game in their favour thanks wholly to the exploits of F.O.Bikklesworth, or Phil's dice of course ~
At Wargamer last December I bought these two pack mules from Tiger Miniatures with a view to adding more baggage to the game in the shape of transport for the machine gun sections. The rear mule sports the MMG while the front mule carries the ammunition I suppose.
I deliberately didn't add any figure to the base as I cunningly thought it might pass muster for our 1943 Burma Campaign games, where my Chindits can always do with more pack mules! Purists may have a fit, but it works for me! I can thoroughly recommend the mules sold by Tiger Miniatures, in all about six different types I've found so far and very cheap at £1.50 each. There is even one with no pack, allowing the more talented chaps than I to convert to their heart's content.Davidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06985725848702292911noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5834413903005641516.post-15287175854958430332016-01-10T11:15:00.002-08:002016-01-10T11:16:06.436-08:00The Mountains of Rhanzlistan

As it was so pleasant this afternoon, Sue and I went out for a drive and ended up near Newport in Shropshire. We popped into a local garden centre complex for a cup of tea and a wander about, just to pass the time really. In one building they were selling off Christmas stuff at between 30-50% reduction. In the Christmas Village collection there were several display bases for the village buildings in the style of 'mountains'. They are made of vacuum formed plastic. I thought this one would be great for my Bhurpa tribesmen to swoop down from on unsuspecting Bolshies! As it cost me only £15 I think it was worth a punt! It measures 45" X 15" X 12" but there were others smaller, and one even bigger with a waterfall! I know it will need a lot of work to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the terrain ( cue Phil?) but I'm hopeful it will enhance the table top in due course. I'll keep you posted.Davidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06985725848702292911noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5834413903005641516.post-23665027471258408112015-12-14T10:52:00.000-08:002015-12-14T10:52:11.559-08:00A 'SPIFFing' Surprise...I realise its been quite some time since I last posted anything relating to the exploits of the Rhanzlistan Field Force {RFF}or its rotund commander, Brigadier 'Tubby' Bykleigh, in this dedicated Blog, but there are so many genres to be gamed and time is limited, even for we retired gamers. I can however put that omission right today by sharing with any interested party the goings on earlier today in Rhanzlistan...
As ever, Phil bought with him his wonderful Bolshevik Russians who, in the guise of the Soviet People's International Frontier Force {S.P.I.F.F.} represent the main opponents here in Rhanzlistan. The game was set up to represent a surprise attack by S.P.I.F.F. against the RFF so as the defender, I deployed first, with Phil having a choice of three entry points on the opposite side of the table. This left my forces somewhat spread out to cover each eventuality, with a further force held off table to be hurried forward if things looked sticky! We used 'Setting the East Ablaze' as the rules and found in the early turns we were more than a little ring rusty! First into action were a column of Bolshevik infantry probing the RFF's right flank along a line of hills. They were successfully engaged by the Mountain Gun of the No1 Baalti Battery ~

The RFF's position was split by a fast flowing river rushing through a mountain gorge. The only link between the right flank and the HQ was a rickety rope bridge. This was the sole means of reinforcements passing from one area to another and was a choke point in the deployment of troops as the game unfolded. The No1 Baalti Battery was supported by The Royal Surreys and the Loyal Tandooris , while their extreme right flank was held by the Jalfreezi Rifles. Beyond the gorge were the Brigade HQ , defended by the South Staffords and the RHA No5 Battery ~
The South Staffords had dug in in depth to defend the old wooden bridge across the river to their front. In the game the river would be tested for a crossing point when a unit reached the bank: on a D x 6 Even throw the river could be forded, on an Odd throw it could not! On the extreme left of the RFF's defensive position the RHA 18lb gun was deployed to cover the river crossing. Despite being thinly spread across a wide front the RFF position looked very secure in the opening moves ~
We shall return to Rhanzlistan and its myriad of characters soon in the New Year I hope. In the meantime, I hope any readers who have enjoyed their visit to our little corner of the Empire will find the time to leave a response to our efforts. A Happy Christmas and New Year to you all from Rhanzlistan!Davidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06985725848702292911noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5834413903005641516.post-10941417304022553442015-08-06T08:31:00.003-07:002015-08-06T08:33:10.641-07:00The Residency at ByklabadAs I said on my main blog, I've been up to South Queensferry for a long weekend break coinciding with the Claymore wargames show in Edinburgh. The break enabled me to meet friends and family and to take in the show along the way. Before we went up 'd started work on a building complex to represent a superior location, hoping it would double as the Governor's Residency, the Headman's compound or even a Missionary church! I finished it off this morning so I thought that you might enjoy a peek ~
The building, or more correctly buildings, are from the Mutineer Miniatures resin range for the Indian Mutiny. The walls are from the Ainsty Graveyard Walls set. I've yet to sort out what I'll do for a gate, the etched brass one provided might serve, but I may make a wooden gate using coffee stirrers in due course. Warbases kindly cut the 3mm MDF bases to my specification. I painted the Residency and the walls of its compound to match the other buildings you have seen in photos here before, with the exception of the roof tiles and stairs which I painted a shade of blue to represent more expensive tiling. The dome I painted in Bronze, just for a change and to mark out the building on the table. Enough waffle: a few pictures with figures to get a better idea of the building in a game ~
At last the RA 18lb gun has a dedicated limber set to move it more swiftly into action against those pesky Bolshis!
Its a bit of a mishmash which the button counters would probably have a seizure over, but it will do the job nicely. Its made up of four Foundry horses and a limber set of sorts which I got by browsing Dave Thomas's stand last year at Partizan. The riders and outriders were similarly sourced and are also Foundry, from their WW1 range. The heads are from Gripping Beast's Woodbine Design range. As I already had the heads, the total cost was £8.00, which is a bit of a bargain I thought.
Now, I know that the limber horses come from different sets and that the limber ammunition box itself is probably from the FPW range, but it does the job for me at a price I am prepared to pay for something which strictly speaking I can do without! Anyway, it will do for me...Davidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06985725848702292911noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5834413903005641516.post-76896546384936780532015-06-03T03:34:00.004-07:002015-06-04T01:46:35.652-07:00Bhurpa Super Weapon

I bought this set on a visit to the Wargames Foundry HQ towards the end of last year. Its from the little advertised Han Chinese range. I thought it would make a nice antique 'super weapon' for some Bhurpa chieftain. After all, weighed down as they are by British taxation, surely nothing gets thrown away. If it still works, we'll use it must be the guiding principle I feel ~
As I was still suffering from the after effects of excessive travel time, to say the least, I organised a fairly straightforward game set in our Imagination of Rhanzlistan. The premise of the game is that somehow acting on his own initiative the gnarled veteran of frontier warfare, Hardly-Standin, has spirited Prince Kasim, the heir to the deposed Raja of Rhanzlistan, from the clutches of his evil uncle, the Jakzi of Jimbai. All he has to do now is to get the boy to safety. Luckily he happens on a patrol, lead by Major Whyte of the Shropshire Yeomanry, who is making a show of force to cow the Bhurpa tribes into submission.

Commanding the patrol, Jon had 14 moves to exit the table with Prince Kasim while fighting off random attacks by Bhurpa tribesmen. The Bhurpas were randomly allocated to the route and marked by encounter chits. When a figure from the patrol passed the chit it was turned over and the appropriate group of Bhurpas deployed on the table. If the Bhurpas could capture the Prince then they would win the game, so Jon had to think carefully about how to deal with each attack as it unfolded.
The Imperial force consisted of Major Whyte and his personal standard bearer; Hardly-Standin and Prince Kasim; The 2nd Jats, two sections, and a machine gun; the Gordon Highlanders, two sections; and a large baggage train of 'tax goods' collected from less than enthusiastic Bhurpa villages! The Bhurpas comprised eight groups of warriors and tribesmen, including a group of sword wielding fanatics, a machine gun team and a mortar group.
The first picture gives an idea of the table layout looking lengthways down the table from a partly ruined village. The route to safety lies to the left along the road leading off the table. The yellow chits mark Bhurpa encounters.
The game lasted 13 turns, using our preferred rule set "Setting the East Ablaze". All the figures and terrain are from my collection, featured in last month's Wargames Illustrated if you missed it! The Bhurpas were let down by the last chit turned being the machine gun team, while in close combat Hardly-Standin twice saw off superior numbers of Bhurpa warriors, even Prince Kasim cut down one or two for himself! All in all, a finely balanced game right up to the end we felt and great fun too. All I ask from my hobby now a days as it happens, though perhaps the odd win would be nice now and then?Davidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06985725848702292911noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5834413903005641516.post-50354601122078586452015-02-08T00:26:00.001-08:002015-02-08T00:26:57.533-08:00Tall Tales from the RajAs I mentioned in a post last year, I've written a piece for Wargames Illustrated on the Rhanzlistan project which Phil and I have been engaged on for several months now. Dan came over to GHQ and spent a whole day taking numerous photographs for the piece as I showed in a previous post too.
Interested readers will be able to rush out and buy the issue at the end of the month and read it for themselves. How do I know? Well, when I came back home the other morning from collecting Matt's tickets for the Johnson's Paint/Football League Trophy final ~ Walsall v Bristol City ~ the magazine was on the door mat! Dan very kindly sent me a copy as soon as they came back from the printers; what a sterling chap he is,eh! Its a six page extravaganza, illustrated with twelve of the photos he took {with many more due to make an appearance on the magazine's website it says}. Here are another sample or two to wet the appetite of the enthusiast ~
Any fan of the Back of Beyond or C20th Colonial themes will be more than happy with the issue, as it contains more than just my modest piece from the genres. The overall magazine theme of Civil Wars will also be pleasing for many folk, as will the articles on scratch building terrain and buildings please the enthusiasts with fewer thumbs than me!! An excellent issue all round I think. Not that I'm biased of course ~
Anyway, back to football matters to close. My team, Walsall, are making their first appearance at Wembley in their 127 year history next month and I can't be there. I shall be in New Zealand on holiday! So Matt gets to go in my place and I have to be content to catch the match on TV, if I can, or on DVD later! Still, perhaps we'll be back at Wembley for the League 1 Playoff Finals in May? Well, a man can dream, can't he....?Davidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06985725848702292911noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5834413903005641516.post-6405787831105535042014-12-23T01:42:00.000-08:002014-12-23T01:42:40.161-08:00Seasons Greetings from Rhanzlistan! Not much activity in Rhanzlistan since the Wargames Illustrated photoshoot a couple of weeks ago as I have been in the sick bay! Dan has kindly sent me a CD with the photos he's selected for inclusion either with the article when it appears or on the Digital Issues site. I thought this one appropriate to accompany my Christmas Greetings to all who spend a while in Rhanzlistan from time to time. The Christmas Ball in full swing ~
I removed the original heads, as they were mostly wearing steel helmets, with a jeweller's saw; drilled out the necks within the collars using my trusty pin vice; finally replacing the heads with some from Gripping Beast's Woodbine range. As I said in the previous post, with one exception I'm pleased by the results ~
The great joy, for me at any rate, is the fact that Bob's sculpting style produces a figure which seems to really love the brush; an unfussy yet detailed end product will always result, even for a less than gifted painter like me. As I said in the last post, the kilts were my greatest challenge: painting thin, straight lines and following the flow of the kilt really is difficult, but I'm satisfied the end product will do, if you don't look too closely. They just need to be varnished now and they will be ready to take on those nasty chaps from S.P.I.F.F. or even those cunning Bhurpas!
As a result I've had a little more time to paint than I might have otherwise enjoyed. The product of this unexpected extra time has shown itself in part as welcome additions to the Rhanzlistan Field Force in the form of an 18lb field gun and crew and the first of the Gordon Highlanders.
The 18lb gun is made by Great War Miniatures and sold by Gripping Beast under their Woodbine Designs label. The six gunners come with a choice of different heads sporting all sorts of appropriate head gear. Mine have Wolseley Helmets of course ~
The Gordon Highlanders are my default choice when it comes to kilted chappies in any of my armies, a kind of 28mm homage to my chum Kevin who served with the regiment earlier in his life. The figures are by Pulp Figures, although you will search in vain for these in the web site's catalogue, as Bob only makes them in tin helmets {for some reason I really don't grasp, given all the other Brits are in Wolseleys!} But, his range, his choice I have to say. I might of course have chosen the new Empress Jazz Age highlanders but I felt, nice figures though they are, the slightly bulky look of Pulp Figures better fitted in with the rest of the RFF, being mainly Pulp Figures, Copplestone Castings and Brigade Games figures. I removed the heads carefully, using a jeweller's saw I picked up once on a visit to the Birmingham Jewellery quarter, and drilled out the neck of the tunic to take the neck stem of the Woodbine Design heads I had purchased at the same time as the 18lb gun. I think they look quite acceptable, with perhaps one minor exception which I'll get to in a minute. The most difficult decapitation was the piper, where the pipes were partly moulded on the head, but I don't think it turned out too badly myself even so ~

The enlarged photo following shows the figure I am least satisfied with {on the right}, as well as my poor kilt painting skills which I thought I ought to confess to now before folk pick me up on it. The head just does n't ring true for the portly look of the torso does it? Green stuff double chins are beyond my paltry modelling skills and I used up all my credit with Phil on the radio mule set conversions of the previous post. Perhaps its just that I know what the original looked like and the casual observer would not notice? I don't know, but you can perhaps judge for yourself.
The result is a vignette for the RFF, based on a photo I saw on the net when trawling for ideas one day. The very latest in modern technology, the mobile field radio makes it to Rhanzlistan at last ~
The mules are from Tiger Miniatures; the two figures from Copplestone Castings; the base from Warbases and the tufts from Mutineer Miniatures for those who crave to know such things. The radio set and battery pack, as I said, were made by Phil. I hope you approve!
I'm currently working on an 18lb gun and crew from Woodbine, via Gripping Beast. The gun of course comes from Great War Miniatures, which I've painted before for my 1914 game, but the crew by Woodbine are a first for me and I'm pleasantly surprised by them, as I'd always thought the style a bit awkward in adverts. Just shows how wrong you can be, does n't it? If I have time later in the month I have a few Pulp Figures Gordon Highlanders to paint ~ I swapped the steel helmeted heads for Woodbine heads with Wolsley helmets to suit the rest of the RFF. Pop back later to see how they turned out!
