Meanwhile, deep in The Pass, we find Flashman Jr about his cunning business, and possibly accidentally aiding the Crown!
The figure is the Empress Miniatures Charity Figure, "Flashman's Grandson"sculpted by Paul Hicks. He costs £3.00 and I got mine at Salute last Saturday. I see him in many scrapes and adventures in Rhanzlistan in the coming months. Of course he will need a ruthless and merciless adversary! And here he is, the Rajah of Rhanzlistan ~
He's a figure from the Mutineer Miniatures Mutineer Command pack. I was taken by the one Phil painted for my Indian Mutiny collection {See Tales from GHQ blog} and have been looking through Mutineer's single figure boxes at shows here and there for one without any success. At Salute on Saturday I drew a blank again, but then the 'Jolly Jocks' kindly opened a pack and sold me him for £1! Wonderful service chaps and, I hope you'll agree, a super addition to Tales from Rhanzlistan!

Bhurpas Add New Firepower
A recent game here in GHQ underlined the Bhurpas' lack of firepower, relying as they did on an ancient muzzle loading monster, The Great Gun Of Bhyklabad. In part it was due to Empress having sold out of the Jazz Age mortar set at Vapnartak! The situation was happily rectified at WMMS last week and here is the proof ~
I use a very limited palette when painting up my figures for the Bhurpa tribesmen: mainly the Foundry range of White, Black, Conker Brown, Madder Red and Russian Green for the clothing. This helps to give the figures a unified yet varied look on the table I find.
The pack also includes a 'bomber' wielding a Molotov Cocktail ~
I find painting things like bottles has its own issues. I generally paint the bottle grey, highlighted with Boneyard Light. For the liquid in this instance I used a careful wash of the old Games Workshop Brown Ink. Its a shame the picture is a bit washed out, you'll just need to trust me on this occasion, it looks fine here in front of me. Look out for both to make their debut in a game in the near future.

"Putting one up the Jakzi!"
As followers and casual visitors to my main Blog, Tales From GHQ, will know things have been disrupted here more than somewhat by my health. Thankfully I'm well on the mend and so the much postponed latest exploit of the Rhanzlistan Field Force can now be told...
In an earlier action we saw the S.P.I.F.F. attempt to break out from its temporary refuge in Jimbai, having been admitted by the Jakzi into the city following their defeat at the hands of Brigadier 'Tubby' Bykleigh and the lads of the RFF! Sir Godfrey has now had time to consider his response and has dispatched one Major Whyte with a strong force to enter the city of Jimbai and chastise the Jakzi, teaching him and the 'loyal' Bhurpas where their true allegiances lie ~
As the RFF moves forward, the Loyal Tandooris come under fire from the Bhurpas' antiquated artillery piece, the legendary 'Great Gun of Byklabad' carried of by the Jakzi's ancestor during the confusion of the Great Mutiny in the C19th ~
As the locals and livestock flee for their lives fierce fighting breaks out at close quarters amongst the ruins of Wytawar. The Jalfreezi Rifles and the Loyal Tandooris are joined by the Gurkhas in driving the Bhurpas from their strongly held defences ~
Despite the presence of Bhurpa cavalry on his flank, Captain Chester 'Chesty' Gough leads the Shropshire Yeomanry to attack the Bhurpa artillery position ~
Fighting continues in the hovels of Wytawar, but it seems the Bhurpas have little option but to fall back on Jimbai ~
Major Whyte orders up the No1, Baalti, Battery of his force as movement on the ramparts and turrets of Jimbai have caught his eye ~
A direct hit with the gun's first shot! The Jakzi is killed instantly and his personal entourage stunned! Without his charismatic leadership and the backing of Mustapha Leakh, the 'Mad Prophet of Rhanzlistan', all Bhurpa resistance melts away like the dawn mist ~
Another triumph by the lads of the Rhanzlistan Field Force, though at some cost, particularly to the Jalfreezi Rifles who had a hard time clearing the Bhurpas from Wytawar. The game winning shot from the Mountain Battery was somewhat hard to take as I've never found it all that effective when in command of the RFF myself! Now that the Jakzi is removed from the political scene in Jimbai perhaps Prince Kasim may yet regain his throne? No doubt though that Mustapha Leakh may recover and hatch an evil plot to deny the lad his birthright!
The rules we used we Setting the East Ablaze. The figures and terrain are all from my collection: the walls of Jimbai have done duty in the Sudan before now and the buildings of Wytawar are to be found in the Chronicles of Byklabad during the Great Mutiny. Here in GHQ terrain has to have multiple applications to help with storage issues. I don't really mind that myself, but if your sensibilities are inflamed I beg your forgiveness.

Mustapha Leakh
A more martial rendering of the Mad Prophet of Rhanzlistan!
He's a Mutineer Miniatures figure, from their Indian Mutiny range, but he will do just nicely to lead the Bhurpa hordes in revolt sometime soon...

Red Incursion Repulsed at Haztonawar
From today's copy of The Rhanzlistan Times comes welcome news from the frontier of the exploits of the Rhanzlistan Field Force and its intrepid commander, Brigadier 'Tubby' Bykleigh ~
The frontier village of Haztonawar was strangely deserted reported the scouts from the RFF.
The cause of this unusual circumstance was soon revealed to be the advances of Red Robinski and his SPIFF!
Acting with clear and decisive intent, Brig Bykleigh soon deployed his forces towards the deserted village.
Heavy going along some of the roads {aka dreadful dice throws} delayed the RR armoured car as it advanced to support the Jalfreezi Rifles.
The Red Hordes were massing ominously to the north of the village.
However, the armoured car cleared its difficult road going {threw better dice this time!} and advanced down the main village street to confront and then repulse the Red cavalry advance.
In the meantime, the Shropshire Yeomanry were moving to the left flank in support of the advance of the Loyal Tandooris. Bykleigh's plan was becoming clearer: block the Reds in the centre, hold them on his right and turn their Left!
Alert to the threat, Robinski moved Bolshevik infantry onto his flank.
Major White gallantly lead the Yeomanry in a charge on the enemy, only to be repulsed with heavy losses by concentrated fire.
In the centre, the Jalfreezi Rifles, supported by the No1 (Baalti} Battery occupied the buildings at the south end of the village.
While the 2nd Gurkha Rifles held the right flank, first halting and then repulsing the Red cavalry charges, only to find themselves flanked in turn by the Red armoured car!
This left the Jalfreezis rather isolated in Haztonawar's empty homes. But, were they dismayed? No! They gallantly repulsed every effort to dislodge them although throughout the action they were under constant and galling fire!
The Gurkhas though on the right first retired and finally broke, the remnant heading south seeking safety!
Despite the loss of the Yeomanry, the RFF's left flank was determinedly held by the Tandooris, trading shots with their Red foe and, despite heavy losses, refusing to quit their position.
In Haztonawar things had reached a crisis point and even Brig Bykleigh was forced to join in the defence!
The Red armoured car found itself behind the RFF's open flank, but was engaged by the men of the No1 {Baalti} Battery in a long range duel!
Heavy losses on both sides now forced Army Morale checks. While the RFF passed their first test, the SPIFF failed not only the first, which halted them, but the second which saw them compelled to retire.
Despite having been fought to a standstill, the men of the RFF found themselves in uncontested possession of the ruins of Haztonawar! The forces of Robinski have been once more thrown back in disarray! Only time will tell if they will rise again to threaten this remote outpost of Empire! In the meantime, "God Save the King!"
The rules we used were Setting the East Ablaze, available from Caliver Books of course. The figures are from our respective collections and feature many manufacturers, Copplestone, Pulp Figures and Brigade Games being prominent amongst them. The buildings are from Mutineer and the vegetation from The Last Valley.

Air Support for the RFF
When the 2014 Campaigning season gets underway here in GHQ, the Rhanzlistan Field Force will have some added air support in the form of an Airco A10. Obviously very obsolete by the 1920's, but then Rhanzlistan is a bit of a backwater and is hardly likely to make the RAF's list of priorities for new aircraft after all! A couple of shots of the plane in the 'skies' over my tabletop battlefield ~
The plane will be in the safe hands of Captain Bicclesworth, DFC & bar, veteran Ace of many encounters with von Rhobinsaan's Flying Circus over the Western Front in the Great War ~
Look out for his exploits in the air over Rhanzlistan {and on the ground} in 2014! Happy New Year to you all!

The Loyal Tandooris...
...have been posted to Rhanzlistan for the 2014 Campaigning Season. Having made their name in countless actions against Chief Bykelezi in Darkest Africa and the 'Barmy Bykli' in the Sudan, the Loyal Tandooris have now been posted to support the Rhanzlistan Field Force under the command of Brigadier 'Tubby' Bykleigh.
The commanding Officer of the regiment. Lt Col Whyte, and his aide, Major Thomas ~
'A' company , commanded by Captain, the Hon, William Watkiss ~
'B' Company, commanded by Lt Norris, a short officer with a giant heart ~
With the exception of Lt Norris, commanding 'B' Company {who is a Pulp Miniatures figure from the British Officers set} the figures are all from Copplestone Miniatures' fine, if small range for WWI/the Back of Beyond. The range of Indian troops is partially incomplete, lacking Lewis gunners and a command for the Punjabi machine gun team. Sadly I doubt there is much prospect of any new figures in the range, it seems to me that he has at least partly retired!
The RFF project has almost run its course now. I plan to add some Brigade Games Indian cavalry, Aston's Scouts in the new year and perhaps either a second mountain gun or perhaps a battery of 13lb quick fire guns. I have a WWI limber set from Foundry which I could convert with some Gripping Beast/ Woodbine heads if I choose the latter option.
Whatever the outcome, I look forward to more gripping adventures and resounding triumpha for the RFF in 2014!
